Learning in the Field

Field trips are a popular and well-established method of education, and have both short term and long terms benefits for the students.  It is an opportunity to learn about a subject in a more hands-on and immersive way than they can in the classroom. The Department of Commerce organized the annual field trip early this year, and took 50 students to visit factories, plantations and museum. The group comprising of first years, second years and third years, were excited and signed up eagerly. For 10 students, it was their first visit out of the district!  The two day trip, was a mixture of learning from industry experts and enjoying the bountiful nature in God’s own country.  It included a visit to  Anna Aluminium Company Pvt Ltd in Kizhakkambalam, the Hill Palace Museum, Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple, Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company, Carmelgiri Botanical Garden and Mattupetty Dam. A Mohamed Hamthan, a third year commerce student shares that he was surprised to see over 500 people work in the aluminum factory. “A majority of them were women. I least expected it! It is a lot of hard work!”. His classmate K Sanjana agrees, and adds, “field trips like these help us learn about how industries function, use of technology and the trends in business. Our professors were very helpful and took care of us till the time we all reached home”.

Inauguration of the Swami Dayananda Centre for learning

The village of Manjakkudi earned one more feather in its cap – with its inauguration of the Swami Dayananda Centre for Learning by Carnatic musician Padma Shri Bombay Jayashri Ramnath.

The genesis of this project goes back to 2019, when a fundraiser was begun with the help of Smt. Jayashri Ramnath to build a space for the performing arts and sciences. SDET partnered with fundraising platform Milaap to raise the required. In a heartwarming gesture, Jayashriji released her title track from her album ‘Moon Child’ for the cause.
